Time and time again, our assumptions that nature’s bounty is limited has been proven wrong. With landfills being filled at an exponential rate, there appears to be the urgent need to spread the message: Reduce waste.

And one possible answer to the endless generation of waste is: Recycling. If we take a moment to just think, recycling seems to be the answer to survive, not just for this generation but for future generations to come. By filling up the landfills we have by the end of this decade, aren’t we being selfish for the future generations to come?

Recycling, in its purest form is the process of cycling and processing materials, waste materials that would otherwise be thrown away as rubbish. Then, we turn them into new supplies of the same products, or into new materials that have personal or commercial usage. Besides, a positive knock-on effect of using recycled materials is that it reduces overall consumption of new raw materials and energy hence cutting down on air and water pollution created by industrial process involved in producing new materials.

In Singapore, we have the privilege of having one large blue recycling bin (or maybe green in your district, I’m not too sure about that) situated below or outside every housing estate, recycling has been made easier. So, next time you finish that carton of milk in your fridge, don’t just throw it in the general bin! Make that effort to go a few steps more to throw that into the large blue bin, because that very few more steps you take can go a mile in helping to boost recycling efforts, impacting others positively and playing an active role in creating a better future for generations to come!

No amount of effort is too minute.

No degree of qualification is required to carry out this simple, thoughtful act.
